RE: 50 Reasons Not to Date a Graphic Designer

•January 10, 2012 • Leave a Comment

I am a graphic designer, and many of my friends are graphic designers, and upon going through my WP, i noticed that this Project365 stuff is conquering my blog, so here’s a little something else.  This found its way on my FBfeed, so i thought i’d play this game too.

Obviously, like the old Meme days, bold means it’s applicable to me.

50 reasons not to date a graphic designer

by a bourbon for silvia on November 10, 2010

1. They are very weird people.
2. There are billions of them in the world, like colors on the screen of your computer.
3. They will analyse conversations in layers.
4. You will spend the day assembling furniture from IKEA.  (technically, i put it together pretty quick, but yes. Most of my furniture is ikea. I live right next to one, and where else can i furnish an entire apartment for less than 1800 bucks?
5. They drink and eat all kinds of weird shit just because they like the packaging.
6. They hate each other. Out of love. but yes.
7. You’ll come out the last out of the movies because you have to see the full list of credits.
8. They cant change a light bulb or without making a sketch.
9. They fuck up all the tables with their cutters.
10. They rather study the paisley pattern on your outfit than listen to what you have to say.  Sometimes the pattern, but usually the fabric, where the seams fall on the shoulders and hips, how the fabric hugs…. “how would i draw this…”
11. They will fill your house with magazines and whatever is out there that has drawings.
12. You never know if it is really an original or a copy. is it traditional or digital?
13. They make collages with your photos.
14. They do not know how to add and subtract, they just understand letters.
15. They idolize people who nobody knows and speak of them as if they were his colleagues.
16. They take pictures almost daily and all are cut in weird shapes.
17. They ask your opinion about everything but  they do whatever they want.
18. Everything is left justified, right or center unless they arrive late.
19. They hate Comic Sans with the same passion they love Helvetica.
20. They use iPhone for everything, because everyone has one. Not becuase everyone has one. Becuase it was cheap and i can decorate it however i want. >.>
21. You can not decorate the house without consulting them. I have to admit, i tend to react a little strangely if an SO redecorates without consulting me.
22. They steal street signs. That’s a designer thing? I thought that was a hoodlum thing.
23. Always carry their hands painted with something.
24. They buy dolls unfinished for them to paint. or they buy shitty action figures so they can sand them down and repaint them to be whatever actionfigure they want…
25. Everything becomes something other than what it really is: cards as tickets, cards as …
26. When arguing, you will be nicknamed like the OSX spinning wheel (not affectionately)
27. Do not know how to dress without consulting the Pantone book.
28. They hate Excel.
29. They read comics.
30. They want to save the world only with a poster.
31. You will spend the day brainstorming.
32. On vacation they will take you to countries that you do not know exist and have no beach.
33. Museums are their second home.
34. They know more positions than the Kamasutra. That’s a reason not to
35. They can’t go to a restaurant without secretly critiquing the menu design.  I make it no secret.
36. They listen to music you have never heard of.
37. They can´t cook a normal dish, they always have to experiment with new ingredients. Or really old ingredients.
38. They read rare books: stories of children, Semiotics …
39. When you are going to tell you something, everyone has read it in their facebook and twitter.
40. They have own iPods before you knew they existed.
41. The orgasm they remember is when they heard that Adobe was acquiring Macromedia.
42. They have their own shops just for them and there are the most expensive in the city.
43. They want to spend all the money in the Apple Store.
44. You will never understand their gifts.
45. They see ordinary objects and laugh.
46. You wake up in the middle of the night hearim them screaming “When is the deadline?”
47. They see CMYK and RGB like Neo sees the Matrix.
48. They dream of the day nobody will make a single change to their designs.
49. They rather pay for a font than for a special birthday gift.
50. They are always sleepy because they work 24/7.

Challenge: Take a picture once a day, every day, for 365 days. I will be doing this through Instagram and my iPhone4. I’m hoping to publish this into a photo book in a year’s time, which will include haikus that will act as the photo’s commentary. Wanna do it too? Photojojo has some groovy guidelines you might find inspiring.

140

(mon 12.05.11)

140.1: momokawa pearl

My father and I went out for the best Japanese food in town with some state department pals, and we drank sake. The only time i ever drink it is with my father. I prefer my Sake cold, but i have this thing about associating drinks with family members. Hot sake with my dad, mugicha with my grandfather, oolong with my grandmother… i don’t drink to forget, i drink to remember.

141

(tues 12.06.11)

141: my accessories.

yeah, so once in a while, i’m gonna cheap out and take pictures of my jewelry. This is one of my favorite bracelets, though it’s a bit on the large side, so i have a hard time keeping it on.

142

(wed 12.07.11)

142: robot slaves. Today, birds. Tomorrow, children.

I might have mentioned this before, but i keep a robot bird next to my bed. I knocked the batteries out by accident in my sleep once, and have been too lazy to put new ones in.  I have a strange penchant for robot pets.

143

(thur 12.08.11)

143: finally had time to install my new intuos4. How I missed my baby. <3

I bought myself a new tablet a couple weeks ago becuase my Intuos2 is showing wires and looking kinda rough. I didn’t get around to installing it until today, and i’d forgotten how glorious and wonderful it was to work at Covermax with all the tools i ever wanted (this being one of them). Now i have one of my very own.

144

(fri 12.09.11)

144: smart cars and tropicana trains! What a country we live in!

My car was in the shop, so my dad was driving me to metro when two freights passed us by: one was a truck FULL of these smart cars, and the other was a freight train of nothing but Tropicana cars. “Smart Cars and Oranges in over-abundance! Zoot Alour! What a country we live in!”

145

(sat 12.10.11)

145.2 : doug's competition

The first christmas party of the season, and this is the host. One of the patrons has a mustache somewhat similar to this for real, and Ron here felt the need to compete with a false stash.

146

( sun 12.11.11)

146: daddys birthday party.

I asked my father what he wanted to do for his birthday, and his answer was that he wanted to run Changeling: The Lost and have gourmet noms to graze on for the day. <3

133

(mon 11.28.11)

133: someone had a birthday at work, and the baking challenge was Starry Night.

So the woman i’ve been temping for takes baking challenges as a hobby. There was a recent birthday, and the birthday girl challenged her to create a Vincent Van Gogh cake. This was a result.

Pretty damn good for a hobbyist, i must say. Also, it was delicious.

134

(tues 11.29.11)

134.2: beef ho fun and iced oolong.

I call the Hong Kong Pearl in 7 corners “the third in the triumvirate”. There are now three amazing Chinese Dimsum places at 7 Corners: Mark’s Duck House, Fortune, and now Hong Kong Pearl. It was damn good eatin’.

135

(wed 11.30.11)

135.2 : conversation is dead.

They’re in Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace in Foggy Bottom, and they are silently staring at their phones. Conversation is dead.

136

(thur 12.01.11)

136: circa with awesome company.

I had a date with a Web Art Director in DC. The upside, he’s cute (a mutt much like me), and smart, and tall, and in the same industry as me (makes for STELLAR collaborations). The downside, he said, “You know, if i wasn’t trying to date you, i’d give you a job.” RERRRRRGGGHH.

We went to the new Circa that opened up in Foggy Bottom. I was familiar with the one in Clarendon (as i did go to school near there), and i remember it being a ritzy wine bar type place. So we meet there, and the queue was super long. The heaters at the outside bar were a nice touch, considering it was freaking freezing. They knew nothing about white wines, especially german wine. Their Riesling was terrible as far as rieslings go. It’s a sad day when I’m drinking Yeungling over spaetlese. The food was good though, as was the service (i swear, the entire staff apologized for us getting passed over in the queue), and certainly the company. :3

137

(fri 12.02.11)

137: self portrait cop out.

I was supposed to go on a date with my pal Neener to Georgetown, but she dipped out on me over missing packages (a valid concern), so i didn’t have anything interesting to photograph. So instead, i took a self portrait when i was in bed, in shitty light. Some of my photography apps got an update, but i would say it wasn’t for the better. As popular as this picture seems to be, the resolution kills me. What makes me more mad is that this is after saving at High Def. Grumble.

138

(sat 12.03.11)

138.2 : a day at the office.

Another show, this time in Leesburg. This is what i’m usually hauling around with me at shows. 2 cameras, one wide angle for upclose and one telephoto for when i’m stuck on the other side of the bar. I call one the “rockstar lens” and the other my “stalker lens”. I can’t tell if it’s better to have two cameras at events like this, or to just go back to switching lenses, which i’d gotten pretty damn good at.

Also, i usually have a yeungling or two. What’s to say i can’t relax when working my ass off?

That’s a speedlite flash that i borrowed from my pal Stein. It’s determined that i need to buy one.

139

( sun 12.04.11)

139.1: the Baptism of Gabriel Luke Crawford.

So my best friend from high school (not so much anymore), and my ex boyfriend from highschool are now married, and had a boy that they named after a dear friend of ours that passed away in 2005 or 2006. As i am still good friends of all parties involved, i felt obligated to go to Gabriel Luke’s baptism, despite my aversion to churches. Of course, i had no idea what this actually involved, so i felt rather out of place.

126

(mon 11.21.11)

126: my guitar case. Almost done.

I received a yamaha acoustic for my sweet sixteen. The gift had been purchased at a pawn shop, so it already had England and Rolling Stones stickers when it was given to me. I’ve been putting stickers on it ever since. Bands and small businesses, events, etc are advertised on my  case. there’s still a little space left on the sides and on the front. I’m thinking i might paint the back.

127

(tues 11.22.11)

127: A day to study and mope at the prospect of no permanent gig.

This was the day i began learning about Google Analytics, and started plotting it for evil. It was slow at work.

128

(wed 11.23.11)

128

Yup. It’s fall.

129

(thur 11.24.11)

129: all Americans stuff theirselves sick today.

Thanksgiving! My sister and her inlaws were in town, so we hosted.

130

(fri 11.25.11)

130: post thanksgiving brixx lunch.

The day after thanksgiving. People are still in town, and to hell if we want to cook after Thanksgiving…

131

(sat 11.26.11)

131: 3 wolf moon

THREE WOLF MOON. And DREW. And DIXIE BONES. Three upon threes.

132

( sun 11.27.11)

132: tools of the trade.

Tools of the trade. I had just bought an Intuos4, all for me. Just mine. It was right after i shot a concert, so my gear was still kinda lying around. That’s a 5D Mark I, with an 70-300, and a Rebel XTi with a 58.

119

(mon 11.14.11)

119

I downloaded an app for my iPhone that logs my sleepcycles. (turns out that i have one to three nights a week that i don’t get a REM cycle.) In order for the App to work, i have to sleep not in my loft, but on the couch, so that my phone can stay plugged in all night. My cat is afraid of getting up into my loft, so when i sleep on the couch, she takes the opportunity to curl up with me.  Sometimes her sleeping positions crack me up.

120

(tues 11.15.11)

120: it's exactly what it sounds like.

State Department, DC. This is exactly what it sounds like. Seriously: Bulgogi burrito. I had lamb from a neighboring kabob truck that day instead. Kinda felt bad for the guy until i saw his line explode a half hour later.

121

(wed 11.16.11)

121: the ghost of Sammy Davis Jr...

I’m kinda pissed that the noise on this picture was so over the top for some reason. With the mustache and hat and suit, his slight build, and just the way he carried himself, i swear this guy was the ghost of Sammy Davis Jr, straight out of the Rat Pack.

122

(thur 11.17.11)

121: carpenters still on strike during Occupy Kstreet.

These carpenters have been on strike for at least 3 months. It just so happens that they were marching the same day as the Occupy K Street movement, where people walked from McPhereson Square to Rosslyn. Too bad it was cold as hell that day, and everyone went home, which royally fucked my commute. :/

123

(fri 11.18.11)

123: sign for the Golden Triangle

One of the signs for the Golden Triangle.  The signs are kind of pretty in my opinion.

124

(sat 11.19.11)

123: Baltimore.

Another instance where i’m pissed at Instagram for adding noise to my pictures. I was pretty drunk at the time, and for some reason, i didn’t think to make my daily iphone picture of the bitchin’ band that was playing at Flight of the Valkyries inside. So i took a picture outside on the roof of the Baltimore skyline.

125

( sun 11.20.11)

125: only in dc.

Okay, i’m going to admit that i cheated on this day. The sunday after FOTV was pretty rough for everyone that had been involved (which is a good sign that the event was a success), so i used a picture from earlier in the week. The same day i took the Golden Triangle sign, this truck passed me not a minute later. Office Supplies, Furniture and Printing, sing 1898. Only in DC would you find a business like this rolling around in a bustling business block.

112

(mon 11.07.11)

112: window washing is dangerous work.

Window Washers in DC are serious athletes. It is dangerous business. I don’t even want to dream what it’d be like in cities where they don’t have the Washington Monument height cap on the surrounding buildings.

113

(tues 11.08.11)

113: went and voted at the middle school I attended. My how things have changed, and my how they've stayed the same.

I went into work late so that i could go and vote. I won’t get into specifics on my political affiliations, but i’ll just say that my vote didn’t seem to account for shit. The school at which i was zoned to vote at was the school i went to as a girl. It’s changed so much, and yet stayed very much the same. The walk home was a much bigger pain in the ass with that new baseball fence.

114

(wed 11.09.11)

114: hope in silent hill.

I called this “Hope in Silent Hill” on my Instagram. Fog and light interact so beautifully together.

115

(thur 11.10.11)

115: frogs dance in fog

A neighbor of mine has a rather eclectic and yet well thought out front yard. I was amused by this frog drummer. i don’t know how many years he’d stood at their front porch, but he was new to me.

116

(fri 11.11.11)

116

Coming from a military family, we tend to take Veteran’s day and Memorial day quite seriously. A friend of mine, who happened to be an Airborne Ranger, drove about 2 hours to come have dinner with me and chill out and generally celebrate both having been in the Army and not being in the Army anymore.

We went to my favorite Indian restaurant, the only place that serves Kingfisher around me,  and delicious, delicious Indian food. Mmmmmmshrimpkormammmmmmm.

117

(sat 11.12.11)

117

Sometimes i really dig going to craft stores that have an ENORMOUS fake flower section. Sometimes, i find flowers that are way out of season, and i make art out of them, one way or another.

118

( sun 11.13.11)

118: shooting a metal video on a Sunday morning. Behold: the feast.

My pals A Sound of Thunder have recently released their single Kill That Bitch. We teamed up Duy Tran to shoot a video for it. They tend to take me with them on long road trips to far away gigs, so i thought i would gift them with the feast of a thousand overworked metalheads. Yeungling light and a shit ton of tacos. It’s amazing how much you can get for 80 bucks.  Thanks for awesome times, guys. Oh yeah, i took real pictures too…..

105: it's a silent hill kind of Halloween in VA.

Halloween held a Silent Hill kind of morning in Virginia.

106

(tues 11.01.11)

106

I pass this place every day on my way to and from work, and i want to try it one day.

107

(wed 11.02.11)

107: potbelly's

I’ve been teaching one of my coworkers how to use the Adobe Creative Suite. DC has a decided lack of outlets. Potbelly’s is one of the few places with an outlet. A singular, ever-coveted outlet. That woman in the white jacket had moved in on our spot, so we had to go 3 blocks away to the only Starbucks were one could sit down.

108

(thur 11.03.11)

108: it's actually starting to look like fall in dc...

Fall skipped October apparently. It didn’t start looking like Fall in DC until November.  Does this mean that in April, we’ll still have snow on the ground?

109

(fri 11.04.11)

109

My friend Liz had a birthday party. There’s a hidden nook in Old Town Alexandria called Medieval Madness that is about as close to a period feast as one can get without being at an SCA event. Except there was heat and we didn’t get threeks or twoks (eat with your fingers damnit!). I got picked out to be the lady for my champion fought. The staff were great, the booze was plentiful, and it was a great time. I was supposed to head straight to Gaithersburg afterwards, but i was SO beat that i decided that passing out at home was a better idea. Happy berfday Liz.

110

(sat 11.05.11)

110.3 happy guy fawkes night!

Yeah, that trip to Gaithersburg I mentioned was technically a carpool point before we rolled on to Syracuse NY for Metalcuse 2. It just so happened to be on the 5th of November, and Jesse Keen, the bassist for A Sound of Thunder, was surprisingly the only one well read enough to remember that it was a METAL festival, during the Occupy Wallstreet Movement in NY, ON Guy Fawkes Night, to remember to wear the damn mask. Come on guys, don’t you at least read comic books? How about watching silly snipped movies based on comic books?

111

( sun 11.06.11)

111

We felt the need to stop at POS truckstop diner in Syracuse on the way home. Post Metal-Festival meals have been a great pre-9 hour drive jumpstart. Turns out the food was pretty good. They had shitty had coin operated tvs too.  Ahhh, Americana. I love road tripping with these guys.

Photography: Flight of the Valkyries 5

•November 24, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Some of you might recall my pictures from Flight of the Valkyries East, at the Ottobar last year. Well, i was asked to come back again this year, where it was hosted again in Baltimore MD. This time, it was at Sonar. This was the best FOTV yet, and made some wicked awesome new friends.

The downside was that my very expensive Canon with crappy external flash took a nasty spill whilst it was being cared for by someone not me, so i did not get to photograph the last 4 bands. I did, however, get some of the first three.

FOTV5: Serpent Witch
These guys made me super nostalgic for my teen years with their super heavy, super grrrrly, super classic sound. And my teen years were horrible, so i suppose that it would be an epic compliment of sorts.

Photography: A Sound of Thunder: Kill That Bitch Video Shoot

•November 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

If you don’t know who A Sound of Thunder is by now, you probably haven’t been watching my blog very long. They’re a steady photography client of mine, and a local power metal band that’s a force to be reckoned with, in my honest opinion.

They enlisted the ever-talented Duy Tran to shoot a music video for one of their songs, and I got the pleasure of taking candids during the shoot. Those that HAVE been following me for a minute know that candids are my bread and butter. It’d been so very long since i’d had the opportunity to a) shoot with my DSLR and b) do it in daylight that i was actually quite surprised by the glory that came out in the end product. Rather minimal photo editing was needed.

Without further ado, A Sound of Thunder, in “Kill That Bitch”.
